In the modern world, architecture and design are much more than transforming space into a beautiful environment – it is turning residential, commercial, or social facilities into functional and inspiring places – where design determines not only aesthetics, but also the mood, comfort, and daily experience of the people inside.
"Conversations on Design" is another initiative of the multi-brand showroom Mosaics, which will show us the field of design from the world of architects and designers. The country's leading designers will share their visions and experience, with the help of which they are still actively creating unique spaces.
Together we will discover how functionality combines with aesthetics, how to create an environment where life is even more inspiring and harmonious.
The first guest is Megi Devadze, founder and director of Fortis.
Maggie, tell us when and why you became interested in interior design?
I have loved art since childhood. I noticed that I perceived space differently — I drew, created works of art, and was always looking for a way to make my environment more interesting and comfortable. After entering the Academy of Arts, architecture and interior design took a special place in my life. The path to becoming a professional began at a particularly responsible stage — at about 24 years old, when I was a mother of 3 children and had to do everything independently. This was a challenge that shaped me not only as a mother, but also as a designer and architect. Today, my goal is to use this experience to create spaces for people that are not only beautiful, but also make their lives better.
What has had the biggest influence on your design vision?
The formation of my design vision was not a single event — it was a long and gradual process. Initially, observing the work of other designers and architects became an important source. Observation not only helped me gain inspiration, but also taught me how to see details, colors and composition with new eyes. Design development for me is the result of constant work, research and practice. Year after year, I found myself improving my vision — with each project I learned new approaches, tried to follow modern trends and in the process refined my own style.
I believe that professionalism never ends — it is a continuous process of learning and development. My 20 years of experience are a clear example of this. It is this constant desire to grow and change that allows me to adapt my work to current trends and always strive to achieve the best results.
AsOHow does your personal style and taste influence your projects?
For me, as a designer and architect, the client's vision and wishes are the top priority. Based on our professionalism, we always offer new ideas, stylistic solutions and design elements that further enrich the project. This balance — taking into account the client's wishes and using our experience — allows us to create projects that are not only visually appealing,
But also practical. The end result is satisfied users and spaces that maintain aesthetic harmony along with functionality.
What does a typical working day for a designer look like?
A typical working day for a designer is always dynamic and varied. Starting the morning with a quiet rest is essential for me — it allows me to unwind, focus, and organize my daily plans. Communication with team members at the beginning of the working day is of particular importance. We plan the stages of ongoing projects, select priorities, and determine the sequence of work. This process is important because projects are often at different stages — some are at the stage of idea formation, while others are already in the process of implementation.
During the day, I work on sketches, visualizations, material selection, and technical details. Each project requires an individual approach, so time allocation and focus are crucial. At the end of the working day, I always evaluate the completed tasks and plan the next day's tasks to ensure that each project is as smooth and complete as possible.
A designer's day may seem non-standard to many, but the energy in these constant changes and challenges is what makes this profession so interesting and attractive.
What is the most interesting and most challenging part of your work process?
For me, each stage of the work process brings its own sincere interest and pleasure. Each project is a new challenge for me, which constantly gives me inspiration and energy. The working day can be busy and often tiring, but I always find pleasure in it, because design is not only a profession for me, but also an art. However, the most difficult part is still the first meetings with the client. This is the stage when we need to be able to understand their wishes and requirements as accurately as possible. This process is very responsible, because the entire structure of the project will be built on this. Creating an ideal design is possible only when we are able to correctly connect their needs, wishes and expectations with our professionalism. That is why, if we are able to correctly perceive the client's requirements in this first meeting, the next steps will be much easier and more harmonious.
How do you seek and find inspiration when working on new projects?
One of my main sources for finding inspiration for new projects is Pinterest. This platform offers a variety of visuals and ideas, which greatly contributes to the creation of a unique and modern solution for each design. However, Pinterest is only one source. Inspiration often comes from real spaces, nature, trends in modern architecture and interior design, and other art forms. As designers and architects, we are constantly looking for new styles and trends to use in projects that are not yet widespread and create something different and special.
What is the most intriguing trend emerging in design right now?
One of the most interesting trends today is the renovation of abandoned and ancient places. This trend is currently gaining interest and has become especially relevant as more and more people are looking for ways to combine history, tradition and modernity. The renovation process preserves authenticity, but modernizes it with modern design and technology. The idea is to breathe new life into old buildings and bring modern life to places that have historical significance.
What do you think everyone should know when decorating a home?
When designing a home, it is most important that people approach space with two main aspects in mind: comfort and functionality.
It is also important that each room serves a specific purpose. For example, a living space should be such that it creates a pleasant atmosphere and the right charge for a person emotionally. It is better to use styles and elements that are not only trendy, but also pleasant and functional for us, personally.
Finally, we should always remember that our home should be an authentic expression of our personality. This space should reflect our tastes, needs, and lifestyle, making our everyday lives more comfortable and interesting.
An item that you always have with you?
As a designer who is constantly working on various projects, my favorite thing to carry with me at all times, it will come as no surprise to you, is a tape measure and a small laser. This tool is critically important to me, as it helps me accurately mark the proportions of spaces, layout, and make the necessary adjustments to achieve the perfect result. Although modern technologies and programs make our work much easier, a tape measure still remains one of the most necessary and indispensable tools for me that I use every day.
If you could design one city or space from scratch, which one would it be?
I have had the idea of creating a business city for a long time. I feel that in Georgia, especially near Tbilisi, there is a chance to take a step towards a concept that encompasses modern needs, technological capabilities and visual styles. It would not be just a business center, but a space that is tailored to people’s everyday lives, with new technologies and environmentally friendly approaches. I want to create an environment in this city with updated architecture, innovative interiors and sophisticated urban design, where work and comfort are perfectly combined, where people feel truly comfortable and productive.
Which habit do you think is the most important for a successful career?
The habits that I think are most important for a career are constant searching, tireless work, and going towards the goal. This is a path that never ends. My advice to everyone would be – if you want to be successful, always write down your goals. You can write down these goals every day, because this will not only help you achieve them in the right direction, but also open your mind to new ideas and challenges. Personally, when I write in a notebook, not only words remain there, but real goals that I approach every day. This approach helps you assess yourself more clearly and in detail, which gives you directions on your career path.
